From the beginnings of Mankind, herbs, roots, and other forms of natural plant and mineral sources have been used to treat many ailments. From earaches to warts, this form of medicine continues even to the present day. Folk remedies are still quite popular due to the apparent effectiveness of many of the treatments that have passed down through the centuries. Due to the rising cost of "professional" medical care, many people are returning to the more natural ways of treating minor, and in some cases, more serious health issues.

To many people, a lot of folk remedies sound a bit co enzyme q10 a form of superstitious hoodoo. Some of the treatments are a mix of folk magic and natural herbal treatments. Oddly enough, many herbal folk medicines have proven to be quite effective.

An old treatment for curing warts was to take green, unripe walnuts and, with sharp knife, make some cuts in the skin of the walnut and rub the juice on the warts. While the wart might sting a bit and turn brown, the discomfort will pass. Amazingly this has proven to be a rather effective treatment for many folk, much more so than if you were to kill a black cat during a full moon and rub the blood on the warts. It can only be wondered how such a bizarre treatment was ever conceived, especially as there seems to be no evidence that it works.

Many of the medicines that our health care system uses to treat illness are derived from a wide variety of plants. However the natural chemical compounds are created synthetically and, as health care costs soar, more expensively.

Many people who can not afford the exorbitant costs of health care are turning more to preventative health methods and are using a more natural route. They are turning to the medicines that have been used for thousands of years; the medicines that are quaintly known as folk medicine.

Every culture has some type of folk remedies. While some remedies are very similar across different cultures, others have a distinct and often unusual twist. Some folk medicines even sound a bit humorous. According to one folk remedy the antidote for shingles is to rub the blood of a black chicken on the area afflicted with shingles in order to cure them. Another old belief was that if you sleep with the light of the moon on your face you will go mad. Hence we get not only a prognosis but the word "lunatic".

Then there are the folk remedies that work because they include preventative and restorative properties. Man has always known that both honey and garlic are good for healing. With the use of scientific research the fantastic natural antibacterial properties of honey and garlic are being brought to light. Further east you will find the neem tree of the Indian subcontinent. The properties of this tree have been proven to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and a very effective way to get rid of internal parasites such as worms. It is safe for both humans and animals so you can even utilize folk remedies in your pet's health care.

There is much that is good about folk remedies. Many of them have been scientifically proven for their effectiveness. While there is still much that is speculation in the area of folk medicine, it should not be considered a last resort.
